Regular practice at SOC
Tuesday
Thursday
Friday
Wednesday 2/1/12 FS Race at (you guessed it!) Black Mtn. Depart at 12:15, stop at Hannaford
Saturday no race
OK, I just cleared it with Jeff and set it up with the photographer to do the ski team pictures on Friday, Feb. 10 at 12:30 instead of this Thursday. We should have the new uniforms by Wednesday so they could wear them for the picture. Kids who would like to buy pictures and/or do individual shots should get a form from Laura and bring $ on picture day. It would be great if this info could go on the blog, too, so parents can get those if they want them.

The Leavitt Hornet Classic at Black -2012 by Madi
The Leavitt Hornet Classic at Black -2012
Nordic racing is finally taking place, and yesterday was a day to remember.....for the cold!
It was 15 degrees, with winds blowing a gale when the girls left the line. Wind chills well below zero. Just crazy, mean cold!
Nasty pretty much sums it up.
Emma was stunning in her truck up High School Hill! Yeah, Emma! Thomas is still talking about it.
Ivy, Maggie, Hattie and Riley followed....kudos to them for braving a brutal course in brutal wind! They were all looking strong for the second lap. Indeed, it was a long 5K for our two freshman skiers! Great job, ladies!
The boys left the start with less wind, but the sky changed and the winds stirred. The temperature dropped mid way into a field of 270+ racers....our boys had to dig deep to stay focused. The boys race was a field of carnage...lost skis, broken bindings, pile-ups on the downhills, bloody noses, injured skiers. All that from my vantage point... The MTA boys rose to the occasion and stayed up and stayed strong. A tight tuck helped keep them on their feet and over their skis when the winds blew under that famous Black bridge. Great job! Special congratulations go to our first ever classic racers Patrick and Trevor! Very nicely done!
Honorable mention goes to the MTA team for adopting a lone skier from MDI that needed a warm bus to hang out in. Thanks to all of you for being gracious.
We missed Jay, Sadie, Draegan and Aiden.
Jay, please get better soon! You make the races way more fun!
Sadie, congrats on a good race at Titcomb! Go get 'em!
Draegan, classic still awaits.
Good luck and best wishes to Aiden as he heals!
Last year, we had a beautiful sunny day for the Maranacook Wave. Hattie, Riley, Patrick and Trevor...be ready for the crazy wave start! It should be pretty easy after this weekend. MTA veterans Trent, Nick and Jay will lead the way. Maranacook brings our best friends and best competition.
Most of all, hugs to Sal! Have your feet thawed out yet? You hit the wax and worked non-stop. Bill Chenard was our best team supporter, biggest cheerleader and wax man extrodinaire. Thanks to Bill for always being where the team needs him to be!
High fives to all the parents who made the trip and stood out in the wind to support the team.
The Sassi is two weeks away. Good luck to the J2 skiers! Then on to MVCs and States! New uniforms are on the way! From a parent point of view, you are all a joy to watch!
Where is the next dinner?????

Leavitt Hornet Classic at Black Mountain
It looked and felt like winter at today's meet at Black Mountain. Here are a few photos I took of the girls' meet at 9 a.m.
At this point, my camera stopped working. I think it was protesting the cold. It was a great race. The results have not been posted yet. I wasn't there for the boys' race, but Mattie might update us on that one.

Riley and Hattie going into their 2nd loop
Maggie rounding the first curve.
Emma overtaking number 23.
Ivy tucks for the finish.

Pointers for Students and Parents attending Nordic Ski Races
Pointers for Students and Parents attending Nordic Ski Races
By Kathy H.
- Dress in layers, kids get warmer than they think they will
- Chocolate milk is being recommended as the perfect post race drink
- Everything takes longer than you think
- At most races you can see the kids at more than one spot, it varies from hill to hill so ask around
- Headbands work better than hats in most weather conditions because the kids sweat so much, bold easy to spot ones are best for observers to be able to identify kids,
- If you like to ski bring your skis you can often ski a little at races,
- For the big races parents often organize a tailgate party with food, etc... for the kids

If you can't race, go watch a race! Looks like the Nordic team is heading to Rumford on Friday to watch the races and cheer Sadie on. The best skiers in the America are at Black Mountian in Maine for the Cross-Country National Championship Races. Bus will leave school at 8:30. Not sure when it will head back and if there will be a practice later. You might want to pack a lunch for Friday. Black Mt. also sells food.

Re: Fundraising for States From Madi
Hi All..
Re: Fundraising for States
We did a quick bottle drive over the past weekend.
Thomas and Patrick collected 3 car loads and 1 truck load of bottles and
dropped them at the Kingfield Redemption Center.
There is a few hundred dollars in the account at this time, (before we did the weekend drive.) Thanks Gisele, for setting it up.
Bottles can be dropped off for MTA NORDIC TEAM any time.
If you know anyone that had a party this holiday season....check them out for bottles!
We are happy to do a pick up if you have bottles that need to be collected.
For those of you that live out of Kingfield, I will gladly meet you and your bottles at MTA.
NECN says the weather pattern is changing. Next week may bring precip! Yeah!
Thanks to all...and good luck tomorrow! While this may not be an ideal race, we support your efforts and hard work to keep strong and motivated. And Maranacook is always a blast!
